A Watercolour Lesson

When Tara of Ephemera asked me to give her a Watercolour lesson, I was thrilled to pieces!

So I've compiled a little tutorial on how to use one of my favourite techniques involving SALT.

It is a simple technique - and the results are always unique.

First things First: Pull out your watercolours.

Tip #1: Tubed Watercolours are more vibrant.

Tip # 2: Use Good Quality Paper!

It makes all the difference, especially when working with a "wet" technique like this one.

You need a paper than will not buckle and curl at the first splash of water.

I recommend at least 140wt coldpress

(Arches is my favourite, and they aren't paying me to say it, they just make great paper =)

Tip #3: Sketch out in pencil the design you want to paint.

Watercolour needs some planning, as it is difficult (nigh impossible!) to correct mistakes.

A good white eraser will pull up any stray pencil marks.

Use Crystal Clear H2O.

Change Frequently!

Use Large Crystal Salt (but not Rock Salt)

(A Fancy Teacup is Optional)

Start Painting in your Design.

Use your brush to place water droplets onto the not-quite-dry section.

Tip #4: Use a liner brush for more control.

Sprinkle on a few salt crystals

and continue onto the next portion.

Sprinkle! Sprinkle!

and let dry!

Tip #5: Leave it Overnight!

and when you awake in the morning

gently brush away any remaining salt granules

Ta-Da!

A simple technique, with amazing results.

Have fun experimenting!

Michelle - thank you so much for this! I just re-blogged this for all my readers, and am absolutely picking up some good supplies this weekend for my camping trip. Now I'm really looking forward to it because I'll have lots of time and no distractions to experimenting.

I'll be sure to post whatever happens (yikes!)

Thank you again - you are wonderful!

I love this! Thank you!!! (And the step by step approach makes it so easy-peasy!) My daughter Lili loves to water color and I think we'll try this together.
